Obsidian naturally breaks into pieces with curved surfaces. Fractures that form this way produce rock fragments with very sharp edges. This is why people have used obsidian to form spear points and arrowheads by knapping it.
An igneous rock that forms when molten rock material cools so rapidly that atoms cannot turn into a crystalline structure, obsidian is a naturally occurring glass that is usually found where there has been recent (in terms of geological time) volcanic activity.
Because weather, heat or other processes destroy or alter the glassy rock, it’s rare to find obsidian older than a few million years old. However, significant deposits of obsidian are found worldwide, including in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, the United States, and many other places. In the United States it is mostly found in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
